Kidney Transplant 1 yr. birthday celebration !!!

Happy Birthday Sofia

Happy Birthday Sofia

Happy Birthday Sofia.  1 year ago I had a kidney transplant at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. The staff was excellent.

I had been on dialysis for 12 years before the surgery.  Although they called my disease of the kidney End Stage Renal Disease it was not the end stage for me. I continued to live and experience life without really missing a beat. I traveled to Bahamas, Mexico and across the US. I continued as the founder and exec director of Woman2Woman Empowerment . My husband and I have moved to 3 states. I continued to do dialysis in those states. Some good places ,some not so good.

I am so thankful for the person who donated their kidney by filling out the form on the license and informing their family. I am so thankful for the Dr.who performed my surgery at UAB. I am grateful and thankful to God for blessing me with Grace to make it through the 12 years of dialysis. dialysis is not an easy experience. It is painful if you do hemo dialysis. You are subjected to being stuck with large needles every other day. It is no cake walk. Along with the failure of your kidney can come other issues. These other issues can cause you not to be a good recipient for a transplant. I thank God that through the 12 years I was able to stay reasonably healthy and a viable candidate.

I never allowed the fact that I was on dialysis to rule my life. I was aware that God was not surprised my diagnosis of kidney failure. If God was not surprised then I needed to keep moving forward. I was not one to continually say ‘I don’t receive this”. I did not deny the fact that I was on dialysis. I did  not miss treatment. I went to treatment as directed.  I believed that God was aware of my situation and would heal, recreate or replace at his discretion. So I continued for the 12 years until I was called by UAB.

I would like to say thank you to the family of the person who ‘s kidney I received. Sofia(my new kidney’s name) is functioning great. Today is Sofia’s 1st birthday in my body. I celebrate the great job that she does and pray that she continues to do so.

If you are experiencing kidney failure or any other health issue, don’t lose faith or heart. Continue to live and learn and love.  Life is an adventure and try to find something to smile about every day.

thHappy Birthday Sofia !!!!!

Happy1 Month Anniversary Sophia

Happy Anniversary Ms Sophia
Happy Anniversary to you!!!

Today is the one month anniversary of my new kidney. As many of you know I have named her Sophia. Sophia means wisdom. I thank God for the wisdom that I have been blessed to obtain these 12 years on dialysis. Sophia is functioning excellent. She has really changed my life. The gift of the kidney transplant is an amazing experience.

I thank God or the person who checked YES I want to be a donor on their driver’s license. If you have never thought about it ,please do. It is a gift you can give some one even when your life has come to and end. A small part of you lives on. it really takes a forward thinking individual to check YES.

So today for our one month anniversary, I think we are going to drink us the biggest sonic drink they make. Then I am going to allow her to drink as many Calypso’s as she wants. Yes as Snoop Dog says, Today is a good day!!

Be Blessed.

What is kidney disease?

Understanding your kidney disease is the first step in taking control of your health. When you have kidney disease, your kidneys are no longer able to remove waste effectively from your body or to balance your fluids. The build up of wastes can change the chemistry of your body causing some symptoms that you can feel, and others that you don’t.

With kidney diseases, the first symptoms you may have are ones that you won’t feel but that will show up in tests that your doctor orders. Common problems are high blood pressure, anemia and weakening bones. It is important to find a kidney doctor (also called a nephrologist). Partner closely with your doctor and your healthcare team as early as possible.

Okay… but what do healthy kidneys do?

Your kidneys—two bean-shaped organs located in your lower back—are your body’s filtration system, cleaning wastes and extra fluids from your body and producing and balancing chemicals that are necessary for your body to function. Healthy kidneys also:
■Clean and filter your blood
■Produce urine
■Produce hormones
■Control blood pressure
■Keep bonesstrong

Following a kidney-friendly diet, managing health conditions such as diabetes and hypertension and not smoking may help your kidneys function better and longer, even when you have kidney disease.

What stage am I in?

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) comes in stages and knowing your stage is important for deciding treatment. CKD has five stages, ranging from nearly normal kidney function (stage 1) to kidney failure (stage 5), which requires dialysis or kidney transplant.

Understanding your stage can help you learn how to take control and slow the progression of kidney disease. The stages are not based on symptoms alone. Instead, they reflect how effectively the kidneys eliminate waste from the blood by using an equation that estimates kidney function, known as glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Determining your GFR requires a simple blood test.

How did I get kidney disease?

Diabetes and high blood pressure are the top causes of kidney diseases. Another form of CKD is glomerulonephritis, a general term for many types of kidney inflammation. Genetic diseases, autoimmune diseases, birth defects, acute kidney failure and other problems can also cause kidney disease. Take a 3-minute Kidney Disease Risk Quiz to see if you’re at risk (located in the DaVita Educational Tools section).

How do I slow the progression of kidney disease?

Ways to take control:
■Choose a healthcare team that specializes in your stage of kidney disease.
■Don’t smoke.
■Exercise.
■Take medications as prescribed by your doctor.
■Eat right by limiting foods that are high in protein, saturated fats, phosphorus, potassium and sodium, all of which can put extra strain on your kidneys.
■Know more about medications. Some prescription and over-the-counter medicines and herbal supplements can be very harmful. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new medications.

As you know I have had a kidney transplant. When you are on dialysis you have a restricted diet . Your kidneys process a lot of impurities out of your body. When the kidneys do not work properly you have to miss out on so many different food because your body will not process them correctly. So I could not eat oranges, watermelon, yogurt, beans, chili and the list goes on.

But now that i have a fully functioning kidney(her name is Sophia) the possibilities are wide open. I watch TV like a kid picking out Christmas present. when a yogurt commercial comes on I say ,I am gonna eat that . Then I am gonna eat this. so weird and funny. I know I can not make up for 12 years of restrictions in two weeks, but I can try . 🙂

March is National Kidney Awareness Month . Get to know what this organ does for your body. You will better understand how to take care of your body and keep it healthy. www.foxnews.com/…/national-kidney-month-get-to-know-the . When you visit your DR. get him to test your kidney function. If you have high blood pressure or diabetes get checked. Get these two issues under control. Life is too wonderful and too important . Live your best life.  Use wisdom from God and medical science to assist you in the  choices that you make. Be good to yourself .

Go Get it  Go Get your blessing !!! Its your time.

His Grace is Sufficient

Just a little update regarding my kidney transplant . Sophia(my kidneys name) is getting better adjusted to me and I to her. I just want to offer a word of encouragement to others that might be in the midst of trials and test. Trust God.! Believe God! Obey God! Trust God!!

Remember when God was speaking to the devil regarding Job.

3 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil? And still he holds fast to his integrity, although you incited Me against him, to destroy him without cause.”

4 So Satan answered the Lord and said, “Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life. 5 But stretch out Your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will surely curse You to Your face!”

God was confident that the devil could not shake or break Job’s faith and trust in God. God had confidence in Job and Job had confidence in God. I believe that Job’s mindset was ,If God believe in me then I will pass this test.

That is the attitude I had to adopt. If God believe that I could go thru all these 12 years of Kidney issues/issues with my blood not being purified, then I can and will do. When I was in school I wanted to get the best grade possible. I wanted to pass this test with flying color. Now as I look at all that I have learned and accomplished through the help and grace of God I am floored. The bible says:

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me” 2Cor 12:9 NIV

So I boast in my weakness so that you might see and understand the true strength of My God. Grateful does not even begin to explain how I feel.

Dont give up on God because He wont give up on You. We  hear people say that God is able. But more important than God being able He is willing . Many times we know people who could  help us but they just do not want to. God is not like that. He is willing and able to meet you at the point of your needs. Reach out to Him. Be vulnerable before him. Be transparent.

Transitioning to my NEW Normal

Living in a place called Grateful

Living in a place called Grateful

Greetings,

Got some really great fantastic and wonderfully joyous news to share . I received a kidney transplant on Feb 21st. Many of you might not know that I had End Stage Renal Disease(ESRD). What it means in English is that my kidneys stopped working to filter and clean my blood. The also did not make urine any more. I have been on dialysis for 12 yrs. Yes 12 years. Ten of those years i no longer made pee. No wee-wee.

But thanks be to God my 12 years with an issue of blood has ended. I have transitioned to my new normal. So i am writing this from UAB transplant floor. I have had this new kidney for 6 days. I had to remember what it is like to urinate.:0  After 10 years it is a strange sensation. But I like it.   So I will write some reg post and then some Transition to new normal post.

I never lost my faith and trust in God. I would ask him from time to time do you see me. He would answer yes. I continued to do the work that God had commissioned me to do as His ambassador. Now I will forge ahead with even more zeal and wisdom. So excited for my transition and my blessing.

Must mention the family that lost the loved one that had the kidney. I bless them for their forethought. To think ahead in a time of such great loss. To want to improve the life of a total stranger while in your own grief. That is love ,pure love of Christ. I pray for them and thank them so so much.

By the way I named my new kidney Sophia. I like to name stuff and I love that name. Me and Sophia are planning a trip out of the country by next year. Lots of things to do and see and share. Be blessed and remember that God knows the end from the beginning. When He created you He knew your ups and downs. He made provision for you. Allow Him to work his will and way out in your life as you transition to your new normal. And like I always say:

GO GET IT, GO GET YOUR BLESSING  IT’S YOUR TIME!!!!
